CLIENT CASE STUDY
Metro Public Health Department, Community Health Navigator Initiative
Project: Community Health Worker Qualitative Analysis
Sector: Government
Focus: Community health
Project Length: 5 months
Synthesizing qualitative data to improve community health strategies.
In ongoing efforts to address disparities within communities most impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Metro Public Health Department (MPHD) secured funding to expand infrastructure for mitigating and responding to COVID-19. Key activities under this initiative included the deployment of community health navigators (CHNs) and strengthening referral systems to wraparound services. To better understand the challenges in resource navigation within these communities, MPHD conducted a series of listening sessions with CHNs, but needed support synthesizing the data they collected to identify specific strategies to better support CHN’s in their role and ultimately enhance community connections to health resources.

Our approach
To begin, we worked with MPHD staff to outline the key evaluation questions they hoped to address with the listening sessions and built an initial analysis plan. We then conducted an iterative qualitative content analysis of MPHD’s documentation from listening sessions with CHNs, updating our thematic codes as more listening sessions were completed, and developed a graphic report summarizing the key themes from the listening sessions that MPHD could share externally and use to inform future efforts.
“We could not have accomplished this work without Elevate! They were meticulous at every step, from taking the time to deeply understand the existing work and its connection to this project, to incorporating feedback and ensuring that the final report was impactful for our intended audience. As a small grant team, having Elevate manage this project allowed us to maintain focus on other initiatives while still receiving a high-quality analysis of nearly six hours of qualitative data. Sharing this information with participants, the CDC, and other stakeholders has sparked meaningful conversations around resource navigation in Nashville.”
